The final weekend of the month brings the first full airshow this part of Wisconsin has hosted in more than a decade, and the weeks leading up to it are stacked with a rhythm of returning weekly events, one-off festivals, and a handful of restaurants that were not on the map a year ago.

The Rock Aqua Jays are the anchor here. Janesville is home to the world's best water-ski show team, and the free performances at Traxler Park are the local event most likely to surprise a guest visiting from out of town. Music at the Marv runs Tuesdays through August 25, which gives you exactly four more evenings if you are reading this at the start of the month. A few dates need to be circled individually. The Tallman Arts Festival opened the month on August 1 and 2, so if you missed it this year, note it for 2027 as the summer's most reliable one-weekend arts event.
Two things still ahead of you are worth the drive across town:
Skelly's Sunflower Experience. Through early August, Skelly's Market is giving people the chance to enjoy seven acres of a sunflower patch, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with events like Date Night in the Sunflowers, professional photographer sessions, Paint 'n Sip classes, Mocktail Evening, and Princesses in the Sunflowers. The paid evening events sell out. "Make your reservations, get your tickets ahead of time," Christine Rebout of the Janesville Area CVB told WMTV. Take her advice.
Walking Tours with Roaming Rich. Throughout August, you can take walking tours of Janesville's historic districts with a local guide who walks and talks you through the routes. The August tours include Columbus Circle on August 5 at 6 p.m., the Old Fourth Ward on August 19 at 6 p.m., and a Midsummer Night's Scream on August 29. The Aug. 29 tour runs the same weekend as the airshow, so it stacks well if you are looking for an evening activity after a day at the airport.
Where Dinner Looks Different Than Last August
The dining map in Janesville has quietly shifted since last summer, and this is where the difference between a resident's guide and a tourist's guide shows up. If your rotation still starts and ends at the same three places, you are missing the meaningful additions.
The biggest change is on the north side. Swad Indian Restaurant, a longtime Madison-area Indian restaurant, opened a second location on Milton Avenue in Janesville, bringing Indian flavor to the city's northside. The menu leans deep — a Friday-through-Sunday lunch buffet plus a full menu built around 13 chicken curries including chicken tikka masala, and 23 vegetarian, eight beef, nine seafood, 10 lamb, and three goat curry options, with eight vegetarian and seven non-vegetarian appetizers.

Swad is not the only 2026 opening. Great Harvest Bread Company, a bakery with fresh-baked breads and made-to-order sandwiches, and Butter Me Up are both slated to open in Janesville in 2026. Watch for signage on those two through the fall.
Downtown, the anchors have not changed, and August is a good month to work through the list if you have been meaning to. Locally recommended dining includes Backyard Barbecue, Cozy Inn Chinese Restaurant, Drafthouse, Franklin Street Tavern, Sandwich Bar, Genisa Wine Bar, Milwaukee Grill, Sandee's Thai Fusion, Hacienda Real, and Wissota Chophouse. Two smaller spots that pair well with a walking tour: Little Sister Crepe Shop at 14 S. Main Street and Whiskey Ranch at 24 N. Main Street.

Construction is officially underway on the future Children's Museum of Rock County, located in the former First National Bank at 100 W. Milwaukee Street, expected to open in late 2026 with hands-on exhibits, immersive environments, and interactive experiences exploring the outdoors, the county's agricultural roots, and innovation in the Inventor's Lab.
If you have young kids, the address is worth remembering. A downtown anchor aimed at families changes weekend foot traffic patterns on Milwaukee Street, and the block around 100 W.
